How to prepare for a family photoshoot

If your little humans need more time to adjust or perhaps have sensory needs, please let me know before your photoshoot so I can be mindful of this when I am with you.

If you know they need time to settle into a new location, then arrive early so they have a bit of time to explore before the shoot.

The BEST thing you can do when it comes to prepping the kids for a big shoot is not to overwhelm them with information.

Treat it as an adventure and let them know we are heading out on a family day, to play together, and explore and that there will be your friend Jess (that's me) taking some photos.

Try not to bribe your little humans (and big humans) into "being good". This is already an expectation that may be difficult for them to live up to.

I don't need your little humans looking at the camera or smiling all of the time. I will direct them if I need them to look at me, but the aim of the game for me is to capture authentic smiles and their personalities.

Bring snacks!! Ones that aren't messy... and be tactile. Only bring them out when needed.

One little thing... we don't say "Say Cheese", "Smile" or "Look at the camera" over here at JDoor Photography.

What to wear to your family shoot

I want you to feel comfortable and sassy. So get something on that makes you feel good. Like, really good...

Wear layers rather than big coats and jackets.

It's the same for the kids, have them in layers rather than coats. We can always add or remove layers fi needed.

Wear neutral or similar colours rather than mismatched patterns (unless that's your vibe, then stay true to yourself!) There's no need for matching outfits, but try and wear something that compliments one another.

If you are having a wider, extended family shoot, then chat with each other before your shoot to discuss outfit choices.

One massive thing to remember is to have fun and to talk to each other.

70% of the shoot will be based around NOT looking at the camera. Bring out those dad jokes, leave your phones in the car (phones in pockets are a no-go) and relax.

Oh and give yourself PLENTY of time to get ready, we don't want any stressed humans for this shoot.
