A Laid-Back Love Story: A Relaxed Wedding in Winchester, Hampshire

Somewhere between Winchester and Compton is the beautiful Hospital Of St Cross in Hampshire. It’s a medieval almshouse and has been described as “Englands oldest and most perfect almshouse”. There’s something truly special about a wedding that doesn’t feel like a performance, just two people in love, surrounded by their favourite people, soaking up the moment. That’s exactly what unfolded in the heart of Hampshire, in the beautiful historic city of Winchester.
Within the stunning grounds, Sam and Sara got married. Not in the dramatic, sweeping way films would have you believe. No. In their way, soft, relaxed and utterly sincere. Guests arrived in beautiful outfits that made them look like they all belonged in the same charming scene.

Their ceremony took place in 12th Century and 13th Century church which can be described as looking more like a miniature cathedral than a typical almshouse chapel. The atmosphere was breathtaking and guests were treated to music by the choir that Sara and Sam also sing in.  The light spilling onto the guests from the ceiling windows was absolutely gorgeous.

The Wedding Vibe: Casual Elegance with a Big Dose of Fun

From the moment wedding guests arrived, the tone was set.  This wasn’t your typical formal affair. Think relaxed and alternative wedding where garden party meets pub garden meets sunset-soaked festival. There were no real dress codes or elaborate seating plans. Just happy faces, good tunes, and a relaxed atmosphere that made everyone feel right at home.

The couple chose a charming countryside pub just outside of Winchester called The Plough Inn.  The outdoor seating area was decorated with fairy lights strung across wooden beams, a sprawling lawn for drinks, and plenty of space for guests to lounge, laugh, and dance the night away.
